1845 is the year Ferdinand Adolph Lange founded watchmaking in the Saxon town of Glashütte; Glashütte Original claims it as the town’s heritage, not as its own founding. The town’s private firms were nationalised in East Germany and merged in 1951 into the state combine VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe, which made watches continuously through the socialist era. After reunification it was privatised in 1994 and renamed Glashütte Original; the Swatch Group bought it in 2000.
